PREMIER CHAMPIONSHIP

E-mail Print PDF

St. Michaels_BHCThe St. Michael’s Ball Hockey Club was granted an OBHA Premier franchise in the spring of 2008. The team from its inception was guided by its founding member, Mr. Daniel Mederios, a St. Michael’s College alumni.

Although, the first few years were difficult the team began to assert itself in the 2011 Winter Premier Ball Hockey League session with a semi final birth. After that season, the boys in blue were readying themselves for the summer campaign as they had showed they had arrived and were ready to compete. This team like most championship teams is built from the net out with Anthony Flores and Mederios. While this team rosters a few older players, the strength of the team is a group of solid youngsters led by Josh Barbas, Danny Novis, John Macri and Mike Kusy that have demonstrated they can play in any situation and with tremendous speed.

The most important factor in the success of any team is ensuring that the players work together towards one common goal, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the general manager and Mederios has stressed the process and team concept from the inception of the St. Michael’s program and everyone played their role. Although the team has some wonderfully gifted young players, the team also relies on the ‘old’ guard to keep everyone focused and that has fallen on the shoulders of John Giummarra, Will Trougakos, Emile Ferlisi and John Divizio who himself is an alumni of St. Michael’s College and has been used on forward and defence and proves his versatility in every game he competes.

There will always be doubters in the ball hockey community, but one must remember that you have to be good and lucky to get opportunities in this game. St. Michael’s Ball Hockey Club earned their championship and capitalized on their chances as the club sends four solid lines over the boards every game and their work ethic is what sets this team apart from others.

Only time will tell how many championships this team will attain, but one thing is for sure, they are the 2012 Men’s Premier Ball Hockey League and Ontario Ball Hockey Association Men’s ‘A’ Provincial Champions. To the Boys in Blue and Mr. Daniel Mederios, Congratulations.
