With the holiday’s just days away, that means that another Downsview Park Tier 2 season has come to an end. This time around ten teams gave their best effort to be crowned the best of the best at the Tier 2 level. After seventy hard fought regular season games and another sixteen playoff games only one team was left standing. The 2012 Fall Champions are the TBB or The Big Bastone. When I first handed out the schedule for this season many players, coaches and even some fans approached me and asked when the TBB team would be announced. I was puzzled at first with the question but quickly realized that at first glance TBB was being mistaken for TBD or To Be Determined. After a week or two it became clear to all that the TBD team was the Bastone. As with all the Tier 2 DP divisions over the years all ten teams entered the season with aspirations of bringing home the Championship. This year it was the Bastone’s dream season ending with a two game sweep and a Downsview Park Championship.
It was a long hard grind of a regular season and a see saw of the standings. Every week the teams would leap frog over each other and back down as the regular season came to an end it took the last game of the season to determine the playoff matchups. Finishing atop the standings were the Toronto Titans who would face the Islanders, TBB would get the Leafs Reloaded the Pylons and the Barrie Flyers would lock horns and the four versus five matchup pitted the Toronto Hitmen and the Mississauga Flash. After the dust had settled in the first round TBB, Titans, Hitmen and the Pylons would all get through to the next round and face off for a spot in the final two. The Titans and Pylons would once again face off as they did in last year’s Fall final where the Pylons out dueled the Titans to become Fall Champions. This year it was the Titans who turned the tables and were victorious in a three game series as Matt Hebbes scores two goals in a game three victory 5-2. The TBB and the Hitmen also locked up in a three game series that saw game two and three go to OT and a shootout in game three to decide who would move on to face the Titans in the final. With two periods in the books and OT solving nothing a shootout would be needed to decide a finalist and thanks to a Jordan Zachariah goal the Bastone would advance.
So a Titans, TBB final would see the top two seeds face off for all the marbles. Game one was a tight affair that saw the team’s battle to a 2-2 deadlock and OT would be needed to determine a winner. It only took thirty three second for Bastone Captain TJ Stovell to end the game as he fired the OT winner after intercepting a cross floor pass and burying a low hard shot that gave the TBB a one game lead in the series. With a Championship within their grasps the Bastone would play a total team game, bottling up the neutral zone and pressuring the Titans defensemen every time they touched the ball. The final score would read 5-1 Bastone as forward Brandon Brown would score two goals and add two assists in the series clinching victory.
With so many deserving individuals as playoff MVP the one player that was critical in every game and in many wins was a major reason why the Bastone were victorious was goaltender Ralph Pellicori who compiled a 6-1 record allowing only eleven goals in seven playoff games. Ralph was named the 2012 Fall Tier 2 Playoff MVP. The Downsview Park Ball Hockey League would like to Congratulate Coach Johnny Vono, GM Mario Ventullo and the entire TBB organization for capturing their first Tier 2 Championship. The TBB have now qualified for the Regional Championships Quebec City, July 2013 where they will represent Ontario in their quest for the next Championship on their list.
I would like to thank all ten teams and their entire organizations for their dedication and support throughout the year. Our winter season will commence in early January where ten teams will once again begin the trek for Tier 2 supremacy.
Happy Holidays and hope to see you all at the Hangar!
