The word dynasty cannot be used loosely in today’s sports world as in most major professional sports there are a plethora of great teams. But not one can say they have won three or more straight Championships. However in the ball hockey universe the Falco Steelers is just that in the Masters level of play.
They have won three straight OBHA Provincial Championships, a feat in its own. They are the back to back 2012 and 2013 Winter Masters Provincial Champions and they are the reigning 2013 Summer Masters Provincial Champions. In total they have claimed six Championships, three Provincial titles and three league Championships; 2012 Fall, 2013 Summer and most recently the 2013-2014 Winter Masters Northwest Toronto Ball Hockey League Championship.
It was a dominating season finishing the regular season with 12 wins and 2 losses. Leading the charge offensively was Jason Derose. He led the team in goals (9) and points (20). Known to his teammates as “Frenchie”, the underrated prototypical power forward Sébastien Labbé also had an outstanding season with 17 points. Stephan Panaroni led all Dmen with 13 points. The goaltending duo of Andrew Smith and Chris Martin led the league with a mere 30 goal against combined in 14 games.
Their semi-final matchup was against the Flyers and the dominance continued as they swept the series in two games 6-3 and 4-1. The final was set against the Toronto Jaguars who finished the regular season 11-3-0.
The Steelers swept the season series 3-0, the only losses the Jaguars would surrender. More of the same would continue in game one of the final as the Steelers would dominate from start to finish. The final score would be 6-2. The Toronto Jaguars would have more pride and wouldn’t just roll over to this dominant team. They came our roaring in game two and played their most complete game of the season and they shocked the Steelers 3-0. This set the stage for the final game of the season and the Championship going to a third and deciding game.
Game three started with fireworks and both teams wouldn’t back down to the physical play. The series had been a very physical one. The Steelers only took ninety seconds to draw first blood as their leader Jason Derose would score the opener. The Jags didn’t roll over. They actually took it to the Steelers and tailed their first marker only four minutes later as Miguel Pavao would knot the affair on the powerplay. This was a see saw battle with neither team giving an inch. Ken Harris in goal for the Jags and Andrew “Boogie” Smith in goal for the Steelers would be fantastic and seemed to both build a wall behind them. But there has to be a winner and fortunately for the Steelers the winner would come off the stick of the very talented Chris Sebastian. The last six minutes was frantic but the Steelers would hold on and claim the 2013/2014 Northwest Toronto Ball Hockey League’s Winter Masters Championship.
"Hacksaw" Sam Trotto would win Playoff MVP honours. Congratulations to Rocco Mongelli and the entire team on the win and more impressively winning their sixth Championships.
