The Downsview Park Women's Ball Hockey League is in it's third year of play and to date the most successful as 75 women's took part on six teams, the most ever. The league has grown from a recreational division to a more advanced level. We're hoping in future years to have a recreational and competitive division. We'd like to thank all the women who participated and help keep this league strong.
Two teams dominated the division as the Penguins claimed first place by two points over the Bruins. That would be your 'A' final. In the 'B' final we had two evenly matched teams as the Blackhawks finished in third place with a 5-6-4 record just three points ahead of the Red Wings who finished 4-8-3. In the 'C' final the fifth place Flyers would face the last place Canadians.
'A' FINAL - (1) PENGUINS VS. (2) BRUINS
These two teams battled to a 1-1-1 record in the regular season. But when they met in the final one team outclassed the other. The Penguins with league leading scorer Vi Theofylatos who finished with a hattrick and an assist won 6-1. Team Captain Christine Ingram contributed with a goal and two assists. OBHA Hall of Fammer Irene Kiratzis also finished the game with three points. This team was on a vengeance and no one was taking their Championship away.
'B' FINAL - (3) BLACKHAWKS VS. (4) RED WINGS
The Blackhawks got the best of the Red Wings in the regular season winning two games and tying the other. But this is the playoffs and anything can happen. This game would go back and fourth and Lisa Chartier would open the scoring for the Hawks. The score would stay 1-0 until the twelve minute mark of the second when Krista Couture would even the score for the Wings. After numerous scoring chances in the final two minutes from both teams this game would be decided in overtime. And it didn't take long as 'the little big girl' Piera Grisonich would give the Blackhawks the Championship with a beautiful goal to end the game.
'C' FINAL - (5) FLYERS VS. (6) CANADIANS
The Flyers and Canadians are two of the hardest working teams in this division. And the final would not disappoint. The Flyers and Canadians tied two regular season games with the Flyers winning the third contest. So we were in for tied checking affair. The teams battled to a scoreless draw after one but the floodgates opened in the second. Tammy Crane would put the Canadians ahead four minutes into the second. Crystal Butt would add to the lead with lest then five minutes to go. The Flyers wouldn't just give them the win and Shannon Toth would make the score 2-1 with three minutes to go. The Flyers pressed until the final whistle but Chrystal Butt would score her second goal of the game into an empty net making the final 3-1 Canadians.
