What more can we say about this team. They just know how to win. Finishing tied in first place with the York Express, the Steelers rode the wind into a qf bye and a semi-final date with Saints. The Saints would be a formidable test but the Steelers firepower prevailed as they swept the series 6-3 and 2-1 and the epic Masters final was set. The York Express took care of their business defeating the Cobras 4-1 and 5-2.
So here we have it, two Masters superpowers. The season series was a deadlock at 1-1-1. They had met in the 2015 summer final and the York Express would prevail in three games and then went on to win the Provincial Championships.
This series would be one to remember! And it garnered attention from the public eye as all three games would see a capacity crowd at Woodbridge Memorial Arena. The fans were treated to overtime in game one. A back and forth affair, speed seemed limitless for the veterans of the sport, mistakes few and far between and stellar goaltending on both ends. Chris Sebastian would end the game on beautiful goal five minutes into the extra frame. Steelers 5 Express 4.
The next night the teams battled to another epic matchup. Stephan Panaroni would find the net early in the second and the Steelers had the lead and a sweep of the series was ten minutes away. Sandro Mignosa had different ideas. He would score midway through the frame to tie it and then with just over two minutes remaining he would bury a shot off a faceoff win and the Express hold on for a 3-2 victory.
So here we have a game three for all the marbles. The last game of the summer season. The arena was rocking. The players ready. And after one period we were scoreless. The signs of a real long night ahead. Each team not giving an inch. But at the midway point of the second the Steelers would burst for four goals in ninety seconds and that would be enough. Steelers would take game three 4-1.
Congratulations to Rocco Mongelli and the Falco Steelers on an amazing feat. We heard rumblings of a Rocco Mongelli retirement. We hope this is not the case but if it's true we wish Rocco nothing but the best. A true ambassador of the sport. Thanks Rocco!
