Our league was represented by the Saints Ball Hockey Club who earned their way to Newfoundland by claiming the OBHF Masters Provincial Championship in 2016. The National's is always a prestigious event no matter the level of play. These men mostly from the Vaughan area showed class and determination throughout the tournament.
The Saints were firing on all cylinders early in this tournament. They opened up on Thursday afternoon with a 5-0 win over the Edmonton Soldiers. Mark Duchich led the way with 2 goals and 2 assists. Andrew "Boogie" Smith shut the door in goal. On Friday the team battled against the tournament favourites Gros Morne Wildlife Museum Gulls from Newfoundland and came away with a 3-1 victory. Scoring came from three different players as Chris Morrison Jr, Richie Marine and Nick Lombardi all found the net. The team would wake up Saturday morning with a 2-0 record. At noon they would defeat the Edmonton Sharks 7-0 and a trip to the semi-final round.
The Saints would have the misfortune of playing the other Ontario team in this tournament, Toronto D12. They finished a mere percentage points less than Newfoundland JSM Electrical in their division and ended up in second place. So for the Saints finishing 3-0 and in first place in their division seem like a bad idea. The younger legs of D12 got the best of the Saints as they suffer their first loss of the tournament 4-0.
The Saints still had the privilege of bringing home a medal from these games. And a Bronze it was. The Saints would score 8 times en route to an 8-6 win over JSM Electrical. Jack Caruso lead the charge with 4 points. Congratulations to Jack and their entire team on a well deserved Bronze medal!
