A great person and outstanding goaltender, who goes by the nickname “Chevy”, is a big reason his club sits at the top half of the standing. Let’s see what Chevy has to say.
Chevy I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.
My pleasure Pete, anything for you, and thanks for the opportunity
The first question is how did you gain the nickname “Chevy”?
Seriously, right off the bat eh? Truthfully, I do not know, I've had it since I was a little kid, there are many theories around family members, but no one seems to know for sure, my theory is I was conceived in the back of one, lol.
What a start for the Bruins, what do you credit the 5-1-0 start to?
We have a deep and talented roster this year, between the returning vets and the infusion of new blood, we can field a talented lineup every game, plus the fact that the new faces are proving themselves to each other helps a lot. The returning players are excited with the additions and everyone has had a positive attitude.
How did the move from Oshawa to Belleville happen?
It was out of survival of the Bruins franchise. We have had players from Belleville on our roster for several years, but never to this degree. Having been a part of the U18 and U20 Team Canada programs over the past few years, I have known a lot of these guys, and this is where they needed to go, to take the next step in their ball hockey careers. Having the opportunity to have a guy like Jeff Brokema a part of our franchise as well, was a big key. We only have about seven players returning from our previous Bruins team, so knowing this over the offseason made this move easier to do with having some time to do it.
Tell us what your crowning moment to date has been in Ball Hockey?
I have played ball hockey for more years than I care to mention, and honestly haven't really won much as a player! Lol, Being a part of Men’s Team Canada in 2007 (the last Men's team to win Gold by the way, lol) is probably at the top of the list. Also winning the Play On National title with my Durham Bulls boys is up there as well, with a few highlight games sprinkled in between. As part of a coaching staff, the Silver medal with U18's and Gold Medal with U20's last summer are memories I am grateful for as well.
You seem to be rejuvenated, a 5-1-0 record a 1.00 GAA and a shutout to start the season could you have scripted it any better?
Probably not I suppose, but it's early in the season, and there is a long way to go still. This is most likely my last season playing Premier so I wanted to go out on a positive note. My goaltending partner is on his way as well, so he will be taking over the bulk of games once he arrives and gets settled into Premier. For now things have started off well.
After years in the Premier Division which of the opposing forwards have given you the toughest challenge?
After so many years a better question may be who hasn't scored on me! I stoned Jeff Wilson in a Tier 2 Qualifier final like ten years ago, and have been paying for it ever since, I think he's averaging a hat trick against me to date. So many other good players, Chris Morrison has outright embarrassed on several occasions, and every game there is several guys to watch out for on every team.
If the Bellville Bruins were granted one player that they could add to their lineup from all the Premier players in the league who would it be and why?
There are many players I'd like to see in the yellow jersey, one for sure would be Matt Tremblett. I think he's the best all round player in the country. Someone who I'd like to see back in a yellow jersey, especially this season with us is Jason Toth, another top all round player, who I wish could enjoy the current success were having after so many years with us.
Who in your mind besides yourself are the top three goaltenders in Premier?
To pick just three is very difficult, and I have so much respect for all of them. Since being on the later side of my career, I'll have to go with some of the vets, with no offence to the new crop of goalies in Premier. Dave DiGironimo is someone who doesn't get much credit, but plays so well in the big games, which I've seen firsthand on several occasions. Ralphy is always a competitor and when he's on his game, there is no one better in my opinion. Paul Zarnett has become a top goalie in ball hockey with letting his play speak for himself over the years. But I'll always have a soft spot for Gus, and is the main reason in my opinion as to why the Polar Bears have had success over the years. He always battles hard, no matter what the score is and can steal a game on his own, which I've seen many times playing against him, not only in Premier, but many battles in the Tier 2 trenches with my Durham Bulls team.
It may be a little early to talk playoffs but if you could avoid one team in the post season who would it be?
Our goal this season was to make the playoffs, so we aiming for that. I feel that you'll have to beat whoever is in front of you, and each team poses a different type of battle, so it doesn't matter who we face as we'd have to go thru three or four teams to get to the finals, and worry about that if/when we get there.
Goaltenders are a special breed of players. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
Nothing really, it's just been nice this season knowing we have a talented roster stepping onto the floor, so the pregame atmosphere for myself and the team has been loose, which has helped.
Three people in history you would like to meet?
Sir Alex Ferguson, Muhammad Ali and my great grandparents.
One food that you couldn’t live without?
My wife’s homemade sushi!
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Somewhere warm, not a fan of the cold, any tropical island where I can start a ball hockey league!
If you weren’t playing ball hockey what would you do with your spare time?
Spend more time with my family and try to sell more toilet paper!
Final question…Belleville Bruins contenders?
We are playoff contenders, and I'll leave it there.
I want to thank you Chevy for taking the time to share your views and opinions with us.
My pleasure Pete, thanks for the opportunity.
